“Two Puggles (baby echidnas) born in August were put on display for the media at Australia’s Perth Zoo yesterday. The Puggles’ names are Moa and Kain. When he reaches his full size this three-month-old tiger will be a force of nature to reckon with.

But for now tiger cub Kinwah is prepared to accept a rather nasty nip from his German shepherd Rumble who has taken on the role of protective older brother.

The young cat spends his times cuddling up next to the older dog who has taken the him under his wing at a zoo in Australia.

Kinwah was born at Mogo Zoo in New South Wales, Australia, and has been hand-reared by zoo owner zoo keeper Sally Padey since he was two weeks old.

Cymothoa exigua or the Tongue eating louse is a parasitic crustacean of the family Cymothoidae. It tends to be 3 to 4 cm long. This parasite attaches itself at the base of the spotted rose snapper’s (Lutjanus guttatus) tongue, entering the fish’s mouth through its gills. It then proceeds to extract blood through the claws on its front three pairs of legs. As the parasite grows, less and less blood reaches the tongue, and eventually the organ atrophies from lack of blood. The parasite then replaces the fish’s tongue by attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stub. The fish is able to use the parasite just like a normal tongue. It appears that the parasite does not cause any other damage to the host fish.^[1] Once C. exigua replaces the tongue, some feed on the host’s blood and many others feed on fish mucus. They do not eat scraps of the fish’s food.^[2] This is the only known case of a parasite functionally replacing a host organ.^{[citation needed]}

There are many species of Cymothoa,^[3] but only C. exigua is known to consume and replace its host’s tongue. (via wiki)

“Lucky” is a box turtle owned by Sally Pyne of Petaluma, California. Lucky’s front legs were chewed off by a raccoon. Pyne found a veterinarian who amputated what was left of his legs and created “prosthetic legs” out of plastic discs normally used as chair sliders. The veterinarian’s bill was $900. “Lucky” is now able to walk again.
